Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
