Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
