Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
